What to do with the archive? – digital memory archive workshop with CURSOR
As part of CURSOR07: In the Archives, we asked Clara Eddy to create a physical workshop about archiving digital memories. This guest blog by Clara outlines her ideas behind the workshop.
The Digital Memory Archive workshop was held on 22nd March 2025 at Super books, hosted by Clara Eddy and Hanna Stokes.
Considerations
When asked to do a physical workshop on digital memories, my main concerns were both the transition of medias, and the determining of the boundaries of the term “archive”. At the same time, I wanted to create an engaging workshop on both a creative and communal level, and therefore started with a lot of consideration around digital memories and form.
Digitality and our emotional attachments to it can be complex, and so is exploring the transformation of digital aesthetics and affective attachments to physical crafts within one workshop. You want participants to make something “nice” and pleasing for the eye as well as facilitating a good experience, but also don’t want to compromise the intellectual and activist exercise. It is difficult to stand with a relatively large subject to convey within a limited amount of time, without compromising too much on the complexity of the subject. Hanna and I were at the same time working with the idea of a crafting workshop, so we had to create a format that conveyed the theme and also made nice keepsakes for participants to bring home.
